IB DP LANGUAGE POLICY

COLÉGIO MAGNUM – IB MISSION

To offer an innovative, international-quality education in a welcoming environment, integrating academic rigor with the development of our students as global citizens who are capable of managing their own lives and acting as active, transformative members of society.

LANGUAGE POLICY

Rationale

At Colégio Magnum, we believe that language is the foundation of all learning and human communication. Aligned with the IB philosophy that all educators are language teachers, we recognize that language development is fundamental to critical thinking, empathy, and the construction of an international-mindedness. We understand language as a cultural, historical, and social phenomenon—dynamic, heterogeneous, and shaped by its contexts of use—serving as the primary means for constructing the identities of students and their communities.

In this scenario, multilingualism consolidates itself as a central pillar for shaping global citizens. Mastering and valuing multiple languages empowers students to navigate different cultures with respect, cognitive flexibility, and openness. For this reason, we foster an environment where the Portuguese Language (Mother Tongue) and the Language of Instruction (IBDP Language of Instruction) mutually enrich each other, ensuring that academic development and cultural identity go hand in hand.

Multilingualism

Colégio Magnum promotes and sustains multilingualism through concrete actions throughout the entire school journey:

  • Promoting Global Awareness: Language learning is used as a window to explore different global perspectives, literatures, historical contexts, and cultural values—an essential element for the development of IB DP international-mindedness.
  • Mobilizing the strategic use of linguistic repertoire: We recognize that multilingual students draw upon their entire linguistic repertoire to construct meaning. The school encourages the strategic and conscious use of the English Language as a tool to support research and deepen conceptual understanding.

Linguistic context

Colégio Magnum develops an ongoing and progressive linguistic consolidation project that prepares students from early schooling for the global challenges of the IB Diploma

Programme:

  • Comprehensive Skill Development (Early Childhood to High School): Starting in Early Childhood Education, students integrally develop the four fundamental language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
  • Cambridge English Partnership: Colégio Magnum maintains an established partnership with Cambridge English, ensuring that the English language curriculum is aligned with the highest international standards for teaching and assessment.

As a result of this pathway, students completing Year 9 (Middle School) achieve a proficiency level of B1+ or higher (based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages – CEFR). This background ensures students are fully prepared to follow, comprehend, and produce complex academic content in the IB DP.

Language Structure in the IB Diploma

Within the framework of the IB DP at Colégio Magnum, students build their language study plan through Groups 1 and 2 of the curriculum:

Language A: Language and Literature – Português A

  • Ensures the deepening of literary repertoire, critical text analysis, and conceptual rigor in the student’s mother tongue.
  • Preserves the student’s strong cultural connection to Brazilian and Lusophone literature while exploring works of world literature.

Language B: Language Acquisition – English B

  • Designed for students with consolidated prior knowledge of the language.
  • Focuses on refining academic fluency, argumentative skills, high-complexity textual production, and intercultural understanding in global contexts.
