INTEGRITY POLICY
Within the scope of the IB Diploma Programme, Academic Integrity is a conscious commitment to honesty, individual responsibility, respect for intellectual property, and transparency in the construction and sharing of knowledge.
Academic integrity is not viewed merely as a set of punitive rules, but as a guiding principle in education rooted in fundamental ethical values that shape character development and the pursuit of true knowledge. Aligned with the IB’s mission to develop principled young people, we understand integrity as the commitment to honesty, transparency, and personal responsibility in all stages of academic life.
We believe that student autonomy and well-being depend on trust in their own effort and the value of their original work. Ensuring respect for intellectual property rights is a moral duty that prepares students to act with maturity and dignity in a global society. Students are expected to produce authentic work that reflects their own authorship and critical thinking, while giving proper credit and citations to all third-party sources, ideas, or tools used.
It goes beyond simply “not cheating” or “not plagiarizing.” It is about respecting the work of others and one’s own learning process. It means that:
- All knowledge constructed by the student must reflect their own effort, reasoning, and authentic voice.
- The work of third parties (authors, researchers, peers, or Artificial Intelligence tools) can and should be used as a foundation, but always with proper acknowledgment and citation.
- Assessment is viewed as a true diagnosis of the student’s learning, rather than merely a pursuit of grades at any cost.
Academic Integrity
Academic Integrity is the ethical commitment to act honestly, responsibly, fairly, and transparently throughout the entire process of learning and knowledge creation. In the context of the IB DP, it means taking genuine ownership of your work, demonstrating original critical thinking, and explicitly acknowledging the ideas, data, creations, or contributions of others—whether from traditional sources or technological tools.
It is rooted in fundamental values and principles that ensure assessments reflect the student’s true learning, strengthening trust within the learning community and preparing students to become conscious citizens with strong ethical principles and honesty.
Responsibilities of the School Community
Leadership and Coordination
The role of the coordination team is to develop a clear academic integrity policy, review it periodically, and ensure it is accessible to everyone in both Portuguese and English (the language of instruction at Colégio Magnum).
The coordination team must establish clear guidelines for citations and references to be adopted school-wide, as well as provide resources so that the teaching staff and students can learn about ethical academic practices.
As pedagogical leaders, they must conduct investigations into academic misconduct impartially, maintaining transparent records and respecting due process.
Faculty
Teachers play a crucial role in implementing the Academic Integrity Policy and must act as role models and examples for all students.
Furthermore, they are responsible for teaching students how to research, cite, paraphrase, and structure scientific research within their respective disciplines, as well as supervising the stages of assignments to ensure student progress is visible to verify authorship. They must also provide guidance on the use of new technologies and consistently clarify the extent to which the use of calculators, translators, spell checkers, and Artificial Intelligence tools is permitted for each task.
Students
Students at Colégio Magnum are expected to consistently strive to develop the attributes of the IB DP Learner Profile, maintaining a strong focus on integrity and ethical principles.
When completing projects during classes, students must produce authentic work and submit only tasks that reflect their own effort, reasoning, and writing. They must take care to properly attribute credit and explicitly declare all sources, citations, third-party ideas, images, data, and any support from AI tools used.
We believe our students need the support of the entire school community and emphasize the importance of maintaining a welcoming environment where they feel safe seeking guidance from teachers and librarians whenever they have questions about citation, group collaboration, or the permitted limits of assistance.
It is important to keep students aware that they must avoid misconduct, such as committing plagiarism, supporting another student’s dishonesty, and resubmitting the same work for more than one subject.
Parents and Guardians
The partnership of parents and guardians is essential for the holistic development of students. They are expected to support autonomous learning and encourage students to produce their own work, understanding that excessive assistance or hiring third parties undermines its educational value.
In alignment with the school, they should be familiar with the Academic Integrity Policy, as well as other educational policies, and be aware of IB guidelines and the consequences of non-compliance with the integrity policy. Furthermore, they should promote the values of the learner profile and reinforce at home the importance of being principled, ethical, and acting with integrity.
